MAJOR'S HILL PARK (Ottawa) 2023 What to Know BEFORE You Go

Meeting point. In Major's Hill Park, located in downtown Ottawa, a few steps away from the ByWard Market and the National Gallery of Canada. Main tent is next to the Tavern on the Hill site. Car access: There is free street parking nearby, as well as paid parking at the National Arts Centre, at City Hall and in nearby municipal lots.

The city says a daytime parking ban will be in effect beginning Wednesday (Jan. 10) between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. The hours could be extended if additional time is needed to complete winter road.

Major's Hill Park was erected by the National Capital Commission and is dedicated to the Major Daniel Bolton of the Royal Engineers. When Lieutenant-Colonel By first arrived in Canada as Superintending Engineer for the construction of the Rideau Canal, he had a house built for him and his family on a small knoll within the military compound overlooking the entrance to the canal.

Major's Hill Park is an exceptional site to see tulips blooming in the spring. Major's Hill Park is the Capital's first park, used as such since 1826, when the building of the Rideau Canal began. In 1867, fireworks and bonfires in the park marked the Capital's first Canada Day celebrations. It was formally established as a park in 1875.

Colonel By Statue. The statue of Colonel By stands in Major's Hill Park, in Ottawa. Lieutenant Colonel John By (1779-1836) was a British officer and member of the Royal Engineers. In 1826, he received orders to build a canal that would link the Ottawa River to Lake Ontario: the Rideau Canal. He also founded Bytown, now known as Ottawa.

Hawk Hill in Toronto's High Park has the distinction of being one of the very few major raptor monitoring sites operating in the centre of a large urban environment.
