The Church of San Giorgio, also known as the Duomo di San Giorgio, is a beautiful church in Ragusa Ibla - the ancient center of Ragusa, and one of the most important examples of Baroque architecture in Sicily. SHORT HISTORY. Before the earthquake of 1693, the Church of San Giorgio stood in the eastern part of Ragusa Ibla, near the Hyblean Garden.

The cathedral appears in the opening credits of the Italian TV series Inspector Montalbano, and it also features in some episodes, as does the similarly named cathedral of Modica.

The Basilica di San Giorgio was built in 1738 by Rosario Gagliardo. It lies at the top of some 200 steps and has an impressive neoclassical dome that was added in 1820. This dome can be seen from many points all over Ragusa Ibla, so you shouldn't have trouble finding your way back to the square it lies in!
